Quitman City Council selected three projects for remaining COVID-19 federal relief funds last Thursday.

The first project will be repainting the water tower near the football stadium for an estimated $190,000.

Next will be a smoke test and water capacity test for the sewer system, to locate any leaks.

Remaining funds will be used to start replacing water meters with remote-read meters, beginning with the older meters and larger meters.

The council tabled a suggested repair for Richards St. between S. Main and McAllister for about $50,000.

The street budget of $70,000 is already over-committed with the repair of Tomie St. estimated at $100,000.

The council accepted the annual gift from Republic Services of $1,000 to be split by the police and fire departments.

Chris Kirkland returned to renew his concerns about the old Towner Apartments. He said after a work day in December there has been no more activity, and it has been mowed only once.

“I don’t want the can to be kicked down the road any more,” he said.

He added that he could fill up the room with others sharing his concerns, and he will be back each month trying to get the problem remedied.

Jason Hastings announced that the new O’Reilly Auto Parts store will have its grand opening June 24.
