Quitman crowns queen, can’t slow Queen City

It definitely was not the homecoming the Quitman Bulldogs wanted to experience. After Kaitlynn Barnett was crowned homecoming queen 2020 and Arturo Delgadillo named king, the highlights for Quitman went downhill from there.

The Queen City canine gridiron warriors won the “Battle of the Bulldogs” with a big-play offense which scored through the air and on the ground in a 65-13 win.

Queen City got its first score on a six-yard run by the quarterback Alex Shelton, going 80 yards in three plays. Shelton had the big run of 57 yards on the second play to set up the touchdown. The point after was not good and Queen City led 6-0.

Queen City scored twice more, one on a short run and the other on a 70-yard pass play which gave them a 20-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The Queen City defense did a great job holding the Quitman offense in check and limiting them to less than 100 yards on the ground for the entire game.

Quitman got going early in the second quarter, using a five-play drive to score on a six-yard run by Gavin Oakes to make the score 20-6. The big play was on a toss from Oakes to Alex Burman which covered 59 yards to get inside the Queen City 10.

Queen City came right back using a 63-yard, three-play drive to score on a halfback pass making it 26-6 with over nine minutes left in the first half. Quitman sophomore Garin Kisinger sparked hope in the Quitman faithful recovering a Queen City fumble on the visitor’s 18-yard line.

Three plays later, Oakes took it in for his second TD of the game and with a successful point after boot by Mariano Manriquez, Quitman had brought the score up to 26-13, giving the homecoming crowd a ray of hope.

Unfortunately for the home team, that would end their scoring for the evening. Queen City scored again to lead 34-13 at the half. Queen City added scores in the second half on runs of 70, 69 and 74 yards along with one long pass play for a score to get to the final tally to 65-13.

Queen City, a team that went 0-10 last year, now stands at 3-0 while Quitman drops to 0-3.

Next up for Quitman will be their first road game of the year. They will stay in Wood County and travel 18 miles to Hawkins to take on a 3-0 Hawk team expected to make a run for a district title. The Hawks are coming off a 35-0 win over Quinlan Boles. The Hawks opened the season with a 57-34 win over Maud and trounced Simms Bowie 46-0 in the second game.

Bulldog fans need to remember to buy tickets early in Quitman. There will be limited seating at Hawkins due to COVID-19 protocols.
