Quitman Development Corp. OKs sign grants

Quitman Development Corporation (QDC) board of directors approved three sign and façade grants at their Monday night meeting.

Scott’s Pharmacy received one of the grants for $1,972 for LED lighting for their sign. Another went to Scott Parton’s properties for upgrading signage for tenants in the businesses at the strip center behind the pharmacy. Stitchin’ Heaven received $1,875 to go toward a mural on the side of their building.

The board approved $300 for a table at the Quitman Chamber of Commerce banquet May 5 at Carroll Greene Civic Center.

QDC Executive Director Rodney Kieke reported Stitchin’ Heaven’s Quilting University brought people to Quitman for a week. Kieke reported that 42 people stayed at the Stitchin’ Heaven retreat center while 48 rooms at the Best Western in Emory were filled with visitors for the event.

Keike had plans available for the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store coming in at the former location of the Chevrolet dealership on South Main by Jim Hogg City Park.

Kieke also reported Mike and David Gonyea, owners of Minuteman Ordnance Company, are still planning to build their new facility, including a gun range, on the north side of the courthouse square. Kieke said the brothers were concerned about rising building materials costs. They are going ahead with plans for the facility, but they hope construction materials prices will go down at some point in the near future so they can begin building.

Kieke also reported Whiskey Ray’s Boutique is still looking to expand its business in Quitman.
