Quitman girls take second at Van Tournament

Quitman varsity volleyball continues to prepare for the District 12-3A opener taking on Whitehouse Tuesday (at press time) followed by action in the Tyler Invitational this weekend.

The Lady Bulldogs opened their season falling to Tatum before traveling to the Van Tournament where they fought their way to the championship finals before falling to the host Van Dolls.

“We had a tough week. The trip to Tatum was long and tough. Both JV teams fell in three games and the varsity went to five games before losing,” Head Coach Ashlee Lingo said. “We knew it was going to be tough, but the girls never quit and I think we are learning a lot about ourselves. We are looking forward to getting better each time we play. We will be ready for district play.”

Against Tatum, the scores were 28-26, 16-25, 21-25, 25-22, 7-15. Jr. Shelby Hayes had 26 assists, 1 ace; Jr. Jentri Jackson had 8 digs, 10 kills, 5 aces; Sr. Madalyn Spears had 11 digs, eight kills, Fr. Ava Burroughs had 11 kills; and Jr. Maddy Whitehurst had six kills, and two blocks.

In pool play at the Van Tournament the Lady Bulldogs took down Class 5A John Tyler 2-1 by the scores of  25-21, 21-25, 25-18. Stats for the game were: Jackson with nine kills, eight digs, one ace; Spears three kills, 13 digs, two aces; Hayes two kills, 17 assists, two aces; and Burroughs five kills, one block.

The Lady Bulldogs followed that match with a run past Class 5A Mt. Pleasant 25-10, 25-16. Game stats were: Jackson three kills, two aces, 11 digs; Spears four kills, five digs, three aces; Hayes 16 assists, seven digs, three aces; and Bourroughs nine kills, two blocks.

In the final game of pool play, Quitman took down Brook Hill JV 25-12, 25-17. Jackson had two kills, four digs, two aces;

Jentri Jackson 2 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces; Spears six kills, five digs, two aces; Whitehurst four kills, one block; Bourroughs five kills, one block; and Hayes 16 assists, two aces. 

In championship bracket play, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Paris and Liberty to make it to the finals against Van.

They took down Paris 25-19, 21-25, 25-17. Stats for the game were: Jackson 15 digs, five kills, one ace; Spears 17 digs, 13 kills, three aces; Emma VanBecelaere 15 digs, one ace; Hayes four digs, two kills, one ace, 26 assists; and Burroughs seven kills.

The Lady Bulldogs took down Liberty 25-20, 25-20 in the semi-finals. For the game, Jackson had 12 digs, seven kills; Julia Simpkins three kills; Spears 21 digs, nine kills, two aces; Hayes six digs, thee kills, 23 assists; Abby Dobbs seven digs; and Lindsey Hornaday five digs, one kill, one ace, and one assist.

Van defeated Quitman in the championship finals 21-25, 20-25 after two hard fought games. For Quitman, Jackson had 16 digs and four kills; Simpkins one dig, three kills; Spears 12 digs, 6 kills, VanBecelaere seven digs; Hayes five digs, one ace, 15 assists; Burroughs three kills, four blocks; Hornaday five digs.
