Quitman ISD board approves school calendar for 2022-23
The Quitman ISD school board approved the calendar for 2022-23 school year Monday. Dana Hamrick reported teachers and staff were given five calendars to choose from.
Starting times for the campuses were adjusted, five minutes later at the elementary school and 10 minutes later at the high school. Teachers also preferred the calendar which gives teachers one day off per month. “There are three more instructional days and there is one teacher day off every month and that was something they all wanted overwhelmingly,” Hamrick said.
A subscription to Cardonex was approved by the board. Cardonex is part of the Education Advance Company based out of Tyler. The company said they could build a master schedule in 10 to 12 hours as opposed to administrators working on scheduling for months. “This combines everything into one piece of software that can do it all,” Hamrick said.
The cost of the Cardonex program is $20,000 a year for the first three years and after that it is cut down to $12,000. “One of the things I like about it is that say you have a high school English teacher who is also certified in history or math. All those certifications will be in there,” Superintendent Rhonda Turner said. “The program may tell that you are short one math class. In the past we had to go through all the files and all the certifications, but with this program it will look across the district and find what is needed. This can tell if you are understaffed. It saves hours working on a master schedule.”
The board approved to request a waiver concerning missed school days. “We had a couple of bad weather days Feb. 3 and 4. The waiver is for that Friday, Feb. 4,” Assistant Superintendent Chris Mason said.
Turner stated a total enrollment of 1,174 during the superintendent’s report. Turner also noted a donation by Tru-Value Hardware of welding equipment for the agriculture department valued at $7,500.
The board approved Turner to hire and issue contracts to certified staff beginning Feb. 21 through August.
All administration employees’ contracts were renewed for one-year.
