Quitman ISD trustees approved the purchase of four buses Monday.

The International buses are 71 passenger vehicles at a cost of $71,900 each with a delivery fee of $500 per bus and are being purchased from National Bus Sales in Tulsa, Okla.

The buses are used and each has mileage in the 40,000 to 44,000 mileage range. New buses would cost at least $93,000.

The buses do not have air conditioning which the district will add after delivery. The total cost for the buses is $289,600.

Health Science instructor Brittany Emerson presented a proposal for a new curriculum. The board approved the curriculum which is being purchased from Paxton/Patterson for $20,500.

“This program is sold by career units and with approval, we would begin by purchasing five career sets to get started which include dentistry, medical imaging, nursing, pharmacology and therapeutic services,” Emerson noted. “In the future, I have hopes to add sports medicine, veterinary medicine and emergency medical technician to give students exposure to the highest available careers in the East Texas area. Not only is career education learned, but students take ownership of their education while developing critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork skills.”

Emerson is excited about the new program. “I love working in the medical field. I have been a sonographer for 10 years and I began teaching high school six years ago with one goal. My goal is to have students find a career they love as much as I love ultrasound,” Emerson said. “I will be able to expose my students to a large amount of careers in a hands-on manner, which I believe is much more effective than having them just read about it.”

Superintendent Rhonda Turner reported district enrollment is 1,176. Quitman High School has an enrollment of 323 students.

Turner gave an update on the new tennis courts. “We are supposed to start pouring the concrete Wednesday. We are very excited about that. We are going to start doing that about midnight. We are going to get that done early and it has to sit for about 21 days,” Turner said.
