Quitman ladies still unbeaten in district


The Quitman Lady Bulldogs passed a stern test Friday defeating Edgewood on the road in five games 23-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-9, 15-1. It was the second time in district 12-3A action Quitman beat Edgewood in the full five-set match.

Senior setter Cammie Hicks keyed the victory with an outstanding 54 assists along with seven digs, a kill and three aces. Once again it was the strong and powerful play from the middle with Kaci Raley and Molly Tanner once again blasting successful kills past Edgewood. Raley had 24 kills to go with 11 digs, an assist and two blocks. Tanner would add 17 kills 12 digs, an ace and two blocks.

Outside hitters junior Madalyn Spears and sophomore Jentri Jackson each played big roles in the win. Spears hit the floor hustling to get 21 digs along with eight overpowering kills two aces an assist and a block. Jackson added 12 digs, five kills and an ace. Junior libero Abby Dobbs continued her consistent back row play not allowing Edgewood deep court placement.

The Lady Bulldogs finished off Scurry-Rosser Tuesday by the scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-22 to raise their District 12-3A record to 8-0. Scurry-Rosser held a slight one or two point advantage throughout the first game until a Raley block of a Lady Wildcat kill at the net giving Quitman a momentum which could not be stopped. The Lady ‘Dogs battled to their first lead of the game at 18-17. A kill by Raley on a short set from Hicks made it a 20-17 Quitman lead. A powerful kill from Spears made it 22-18 and the Lady Bulldogs finished of the game on a kill by Jackson for the 25-19 win.

In the second game, it was all Quitman as back to back kills from Molly Tanner gave the Lady Dogs an 18-8 advantage. Another Spears kill made it 22-10 and Quitman finished if off on a Tanner score at the net for the 25-14.

The Lady Wildcats fought back in game three leading by a 11-16 score when a well-place left-handed tip by Spears knotted the score at 18-18. The game ended at 25-22 on another one of Tanner’s 11 kills in the game.

Tanner had 11 digs, 11 kills, one ace, and two blocks while Spears hit for nine kills, had nine digs and four aces. Raley had nine digs, eight kills, four aces and three blocks with Hicks having 29 assists, eight digs and four kills. Sophomore Jackson played great defense and had 19 digs, three kills and one ace.

It was Pink-Out Night at the gym and Quitman Athletic Booster Club President Paige Brown was able to give Quitman Elementary School educator Rhonda Henderson a $1,000 donation for her battle with cancer. The money was raised from the sale of the pink tee-shirts worn for the evening.

Quitman now 9-0 in district play and 27-7 overall and host Alba-Golden Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. followed by a Friday contest at home against Kemp, also at 4:40 p.m.
