The Quitman Lady Bulldogs got a well-balanced performance as they romped past Winona in District 13-3A play Friday, 76-15. It gave Quitman a 2-3 district record and 12-12 for the season. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill last Tuesday on the road. The Red Devils have a season record of 18-4 and have lost only to Winnsboro in district.

“Tonight was a good game for us to get back to realizing we can be a good team when we play together,” Coach Blake Hamrick noted. “I thought we were very unselfish with the basketball and it led to easy points and open shots. Both of our freshmen, Allie (Berry) and Sadie (Vander Schaaf), have really been playing good basketball.”

Berry continued her strong play on the boards and added 14 points and had four steals. Vander Schaaf played a great floor game and had four points along with three assists and numerous deflections and steals.

“Addi (Marcee) has really improved since last year, Ashley (Davis) had a confidence building game tonight where she made some shots, and Maddy (Pence) had a great shooting game,” Hamrick said. “We need to make sure we get her some rest. Carley (Spears) played big minutes and was able to run the offense and get us into some sets while Reiny (Luman) and Kaysi (Parker) continue to be huge for us inside and on the boards. Now, we need to focus on perfecting a few areas of our game to get ready for Winnsboro and the second half of district.”

Sophomore Marcee hit a pair of triples and classmate Davis had nine points, five rebounds and three assists along with seven steals and four deflections. Pence, a junior, continued her steady play with 16 points and five rebounds.

Parker, a junior, continued to made big plays as she scored 10 points and had 13 rebounds to record a double-double. Luman, one of only two seniors, continues giving the team an offensive spark when needed. She also gives Quitman a hard working post down low. She had five rebounds and five steals.

Quitman jumped to an 11-0 lead with 6:10 left in the first quarter. Quitman took an 18-5 lead on a pair of Parker free throws with 3:17 left in the opening quarter. With Quitman leading 21-8, Davis had a steal and drove the length of the floor for an easy lay-up. A pair of free throws with .01 seconds left in the quarter gave Quitman a 25-8 advantage.

Quitman settled in during the second quarter as Pence scored eight. Berry hit back-to-back triples and a lay-up for eight more points and Luman put in another six points and the Lady Bulldogs led 51-10 at the half.

Quitman’s defense was the story of the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs held Winona to one three-point goal as the quarter ended leaving Quitman with a 66-13 score going into the final eight minutes.

Winona was able to score only two points in the final quarter, giving them just five points for the second half. Quitman slowed the ball down in the fourth quarter with Parker scoring six of the Lady Bulldogs’ 10 points.

Quitman drew a bye on Tuesday before traveling to Winnsboro Friday to take on the Lady Raiders who are ranked 7th in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
