Quitman Lady Bulldogs have tough week

Posted

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs fell decisively to state-ranked Mt. Vernon, 47-16, and Winnsboro, 73-31, in district games last week.

Friday night’s contest at Winnsboro was close for the first quarter with the Lady Raiders up 11-10.

Quitman took an early 6-1 lead on three-point shots by Kaysi Parker and Addison Marcee. Winnsboro came right back feeding the ball to post Faith Acker who went on to dominate the boards on both ends of the court. The Louisiana-Monroe University bound Acker scored 32 to lead all scorers.

A 31-9 run by the Lady Raiders in the second quarter put the game out of reach while taking a 42-19 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter Quitman’s Sadie VanderSchaaf had a steal and score to cut the Winnsboro margin to 44-22. Allie Berry hit a jump shot making the score 48-24. The quarter ended with the Lady Raiders up 56-25.

VanderSchaaf and Marcee each hit triples in the final quarter but that would be all of the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs as Winnsboro stayed undefeated in district play.

VanderSchaaf led Quitman with 10 points.

Against Mt. Vernon on Tuesday, the Lady Tigers roared to a 16-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. The quickness of Mt. Vernon led to numerous turnovers by the Lady Bulldogs.

Quitman was able to manage only a free throw in the second quarter and Mt. Vernon led 30-4 at the half.

The Lady Tigers fell back off their press in the second half and outscored Quitman 16-8 leading to the 46-17 final. Parker’s eight points led Quitman.

After traveling to Mineola Tuesday, Quitman will be at home Friday against Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill, another of District 13-3A teams in the state-rankings list at 14th.
