The Quitman Lady Bulldogs made a solid showing at the prestigious Winnsboro Hoop Fest over the weekend.

The Lady Bulldogs lost a first round game to last year’s Class 4A state champion Brownsboro followed by wins over Class 4A Sulphur Springs and Class 5A Longview and a loss to Class 6A Richardson Pearce on Saturday.

After the Lady Bulldog’s 38-33 loss to Brownsboro, Quitman took on Sulphur Springs and won a close 40-36 contest over the Lady Wildcats.

Quitman fell behind in the first quarter 4-3 but opened a 19-14 lead at the half. Team defense pressured the Lady ‘Cats into numerous turnovers setting up the Lady Bulldogs with open shots.

Maddy Pence had a great offensive effort scoring 14 points, with Kaysi Parker adding 10, Ashley Davis eight, Allie Berry six and Annabelle Popek two points.

The 32-30 win over Longview was a nail-biter, but once again, the Quitman defense answered the call. After the Lady Lobos took a 10-9 first quarter edge, Quitman held them to no points in the second quarter while scoring seven to take a 16-10 lead at intermission.

The score was 26-19 going into the final quarter where Quitman held off a furious Longview comeback before the lady Bulldog defense again clamped down in the final seconds to secure the win.

Berry scored 12 points and Parker added nine.

The Lady Bulldogs could not hold on in Saturday’s game against 6A Richardson Pearce. The Lady Mustangs took an early lead and went on to win the game 40-20.

After facing New Diana at home Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs open district play at home against Mineola Dec. 13.

The Lady Bulldogs will host a tournament during the Christmas holidays Dec. 28-29.
