September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when libraries nationwide join to remind parents, caregivers and students that owning a library card is a great step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning. Cards are available for those who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 5-17.

QPL Story Time begins Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. Terri Bennett creates a fun-filled hour of reading, learning, crafts, games and special treats. The program is designed for young readers and homeschooled children of all ages. Upcoming themes: Sept. 9 “Popsicles® Welcome-Back Social” – Sept.16 “Dinosaurs!” making fossils craft. Special thanks to Peoples - Quitman for sponsoring QPL Story Time crafts.

Teachers are encouraged to download the OverDrive® app to connect to our library’s vast collection of eBooks, audio books and streaming video. Many new e-books aimed for elementary-aged children are available online by visiting the library’s home page. These virtual books are narrated in several languages. Also, the online TexShare Database is loaded with invaluable and up-to-the-minute research tools and reference resources. Visit the library’s website at www.quitmanlibrary.org.

Friends of the Library will kick off the new season on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at noon in the library’s community room. The ‘FOL Welcome Back Social” will feature light refreshments. Now is a great time to join this active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

Knitting and crochet instruction class meets each Thursday, 2-4 p.m. in the Shamburger Community Room. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join the group for free instruction.

The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will meet at Monday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Shamburger Community Room. Contact David Gilbreath at 972-977-7988 for details and follow the society’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/groups/woocotx.

The library is operating in accordance with current state guidelines with regular hours of Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to wear protective masks and allow others plenty of personal space. All patron areas are regularly disinfected with industrial grade sanitizer.
