Quitman makes quick work of Alba-Golden

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs made quick work of the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers last Friday with a home court, three-game match win.  Behind the strength of Ava Burroughs, the setting of Shelby Hayes and a relentless attack, Coach Ashlee Lingo’s squad looked relaxed and in their element.

Quitman never trailed in the match. The first two points of the match told the story. Alba-Golden gifted the first point to Quitman with a mishit, and the Lady Bulldogs scored next on a Julia Simpkins’ kill.

Game one was a competitive contest.  The Lady Panthers closed the score to 12-8 with a Kaylee Anglin kill and a service ace from Crimson Bryant.  The activity levels were near equal in the first game. Quitman’s vigorous offense was met by Madi Bryant’s solid play at the net and general hustle by the visiting side.

The combination of Quitman’s excellent service game and strong net play came to dominate the game.  Six service aces by the Lady Bulldogs highlighted game one. They took the opening game 25-15.

Quitman simply dispatched the Lady Panthers in games two and three. Alba-Golden could muster only three offensive points in the two games.  Frustration was evident in the Lady Panthers’ side as they had no answers for Quitman’s dominating net play and multi-faceted offense.

“The Lady ‘Dogs had two great showings last week against Rains and Alba-Golden. I’m so glad to see these young ladies having fun on the court,” Lingo said. “They are really gelling at a good time. We had a great crowd on both nights last week and we are so thankful to have a great home advantage. Edgewood is a very talented team and they will be a tough test Tuesday.”

For Quitman, Burroughs finished with nine kills, and three blocks while Maddy Whitehurst added five kills, eight digs, two aces and a block. Jentri Jackson had 10 digs, three kills and an ace; Lucy Brannon added six digs, two kills and an ace; Shelby Hayes 19 assists, five digs, two kills and two aces; and Julia Simpkins finished with six aces, two kills and a dig.

The Lady Bulldogs took turns exploiting seams in the Alba-Golden defense, and won games two and three, 25-11 and 25-6, respectively.

Quitman winds up their district schedule at Mineola on Friday. Varsity will commence play at 4:30. Alba-Golden hosts Grand Saline on Friday, and finishes their district campaign at home on Tues. Oct. 29 against Rains.
