The Quitman Lady Bulldogs got off to a shaky start but came together to race past the Class 4A Brownsboro Bearettes in an exciting five-set match by the scores of 13-25, 25-17, 20-25, 27-25, 15-10.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind early in the first set and could not recover, but stormed back for a decisive and convincing 25-17 win in the second set. Quitman got a spark with the full-time return of senior Lucy Brannon who has been out early this year due to illness.
Brownsboro fought back in the third set to take a 20-25 win, but the Lady Bulldogs would not be deterred in the exciting fourth set as they took a 27-25 thriller. Quitman then took advantage of some great hustle on defense to claim a fifth-set 15-10 win.
Junior middle blocker and major offensive weapon Ava Burroughs had a superb outing with 19 kills, nine digs, 22 assists, three aces and two blocks. Senior Lindsey Hornaday continued showing her leadership skills and consistency on the floor with 11 digs, seven kills and a pair of aces.
Junior Carley Spears added 18 assists, three aces, five kills and six digs while fellow junior Brooklyn Marcee added 11 digs and six kills. Marcee made several pure hustle plays saving points and returning the ball with some great hustle efforts.
The Quitman JV lost 11-25, 15-25, and the freshman team won 25-17, 25-14.
Quitman is 5-6 on the year and hosted Wills Point at Quitman Tuesday before hosting Beckville Friday with one varsity game only at 4:30 p.m. District play begins Sept. 22 at Harmony.
