As dependable as the U.S. Mail, and more critically needed and welcome, Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot, nutritious food to homebound seniors throughout Wood County every single weekday. Rain or shine, the volunteers use their own personal vehicles and fuel, and donate their time. They pick up meals from the center at 302 S. Stephens St., in Quitman, and distribute them through the region. Usually each member has a dedicated route, so they get to know their clients and build a special bond.

Because of their dedicated service with this much needed program, The Quitman Pilot Club honored them with a “Pick-Me-Up” in the form of a luncheon. Through the Pick-Me-Up Program, Pilot’s uplift and appreciate caregivers by providing small gifts to brighten their day or to thank them for their work.

Of the event, Debbie Robinson, Quitman Pilot Club President said, “Pilot is a family that cares for each other and the community. The Pick Me Up program is an extension of that. We enjoy celebrating those people that perform meaningful acts that may go unrecognized in our communities. We want them to know they are appreciated.”

Chair of the club’s Pick-Me-Up program, Fonda McBride said, “Volunteer groups and individual caregivers are our unsung heroes that make up the fabric of our community. Many of these people work quietly to better the lives of others through service. We are always looking for good candidates to celebrate. Therefore, we invite the public to make nominations. Tiffney Phillips, of Meals on Wheels in Wood County said, “We appreciate our volunteers and they are critical to our work success. We are so grateful for them, and we can always use more volunteers in the service of our elders.
