Quitman Police Report

August 14

Sgt. Austin Milbourn took a report of theft from a local convenience store manager. According to the woman, a new employee was seen on video surveillance stealing $230 worth of lottery scratch-offs. The manager did not wish to pursue criminal charges but did wish to have the woman issued a criminal trespass warning for the business.

Milbourn was dispatched to a residence on Jeanell St. in reference to threats being made. The female occupant stated she was being threatened by a subject who was owed money by a former roommate of the woman. The woman also advised her former roommate is currently incarcerated. The suspect had been to the residence making threats and had also sent a message via Facebook. Milbourn recorded the suspect’s information and tried unsuccessfully to locate him. The complainant declined to give a written statement or pursue charges. Milbourn arranged to have extra patrol. 

August 17

Milbourn took a report of stalking from a Quitman woman. The woman reported a subject had followed her from her residence to the bank and then to City Hall. Milbourn was familiar with the suspect due to numerous reports during recent months of the man’s stalking behavior. A felony arrest warrant was obtained and served at the man’s home by Milbourn and Lt. John Farmer. Robert Douglas Leevey, 57, of Quitman was arrested without incident.

August 24

Officer Joe Andrade was dispatched to an apartment on Richards St. in reference to a dispute. The resident advised he wanted a criminal trespass warning issued to his caretaker. He did agree to allow the woman to come back the next day to retrieve her belongings.  

August 27

Andrade took a report of criminal mischief from a resident of Central St. The complainant stated that an egg had been thrown at his front door but he did not see anyone around. Andrade drove around attempting to locate a suspect but was unable. A report was completed for documentation purposes and the case was closed.

August 29

Officer Linda Williams and Lt. Mike Chilson responded to a local business in reference to an assault in progress with weapons involved. The officers arrived to find the parties separated. Interviews with witnesses revealed a man had assaulted his girlfriend, his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend and a store clerk. The ex-boyfriend admitted to retrieving a weapon from his vehicle in an attempt to prevent further attacks. Matthew James Smith, 23, of Mineola was arrested and transported to jail. He was charged with assault and three counts of assault causing bodily injury. The business owner reported product damage totaling $172. Smith was also issued a criminal trespass warning for the business.  

August 30

Williams took a report of criminal mischief at New Life Baptist Church. The church sign had been damaged by unknown person(s). A church member provided photographs of the damage as well as information regarding a suspicious vehicle seen in the parking lot three days in a row. 

September 1

Lt. Mike Chilson responded to the 100 block of Cliff St. in response to a report of a woman who was yelling and hiding in the bushes. Chilson arrived to find the woman sitting in an open field and observed that she did not appear to have her normal physical and mental faculties about her due to suspected substance abuse. The woman was wearing heavy fur lined winter boots and had paint or marker all over her arms and legs. She claimed to have been left at the location by friends. Due to behaviors exhibited by the woman, Chilson believed her to be a danger to herself or others. Lauren Serene Maxwell, 28, of Arlington was arrested for the offense of public intoxication. She was transported to jail without incident.
