Quitman powerlifter headed to state
Carlos Flores of Quitman was runner-up in the 114-pound class at Saturday’s regional powerlifting meet in Malakoff to qualify for the state meet.
His lifts of 360 pounds in the squat, 225 in the bench press and 325 in the deadlift left him just five pounds out of first place.
Jayden Markham of Quitman placed fourth in the class and Omar Perez of Mineola placed 10th.
Johnata Jones just missed a spot at state, taking third in the 242 class with a 1,480-pound total, five pounds less than second place.
Hayden Batchelder was seventh in the class, while Mineola’a D.J. Newsome did not have a qualifying dead lift.
Ryan Widemon of Quitman took fourth on the 123 class. Jack Tannebaum was fifth in the 148 class. Wyatt Hightower placed eighth in the 165 class.
The state meet is March 25-26 in Abilene.
