Quitman project finalist for state award

Posted

The Quitman Development Corporation (QDC) and Colonial Construction have been named as finalists  as “Economic Game Changer” for their project at the “Shops at 107” building.

Finalists for the 2019 Texas Downtown Association President’s Awards Program were recently announced in Austin.

“Recognition for such an award is a testament to the vision Dr. Randal Bennett and the QDC board of Kevan Burroughs, Randy Dunn, David Dobbs and Martha Scroggins had at the time the initial conversation began,” QDC Executive director Denea Hudman said.

“To be considered among 119 other communities is certainly an honor and we are proud of the Quitman community,” she said. “This would not be possible without the tireless effort and dedication of Heather Boisclair and the vendors at The Shops at 107. We are thankful each one of them chose to invest in downtown Quitman.”

The QDC and Colonial joined forces for a total revitalization of an abandoned downtown building scheduled for demolition. The vision from this public/private partnership not only started the downtown revitalization in Quitman, but also became a small retail business incubator that currently has 15 vendors and more on the way.

Winners will be announced Oct. 30 at the awards gala held in conjunction with the 2019 Texas Downtown Conference in Georgetown. For more information about the President’s Awards or other programs of the Texas Downtown Association, please visit www.texasdowntown.org.

“We could not be more pleased as a board for Quitman to be recognized as an Economic Development Game Changer with the Texas Downtown Association,” said Dr. Randal Bennett, board president. “The public/private partnership between the Quitman Development Corporation and Colonial Construction not only helped to start the revitalization of our downtown, but also paved the way for our small retail business incubator located in the “Shops at 107” project. This would not be possible without our community and those who visit spending their hard earned money in Quitman.”

One hundred nineteen entries were submitted in 11 categories from communities across the state. Due to the number of entries, they were divided into two categories – design and achievement – with separate judging panels for each group.
