Quitman rolls to undefeated district slate


It took four sets, but the Quitman Lady Bulldogs put away an upset-minded Grand Saline team 3-1 by the scores of 25-23, 25-15, 19-25, 25-16 giving them a perfect 14-0 District 12-3A record. Quitman ends regular season play 32-7 with a Monday bi-district match against Dallas A+ Academy.

In game one at Grand Saline, Quitman took an early 10-4 advantage on four kills by Madalyn Spears on sets from Cammie Hicks while Kaci Raley had two kills during that time. Quitman led the entire game, but never by more than four points. Down 24-21, Grand Saline fought back to make it 24-23 until Molly Tanner finished the game with a powerful kill and the final 25-24 count.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair until the score reached 16-15 when Quitman put it away with nine consecutive points for the 25-15 win. In the final run for the win, Raley and Tanner had two kills each, including an emphatic slam dunk by Tanner. Spears had a kill to the back left corner and Julia Simpkins ended the game with a kill for the win.

Grand Saline was celebrating Senior Night and the Lady Indians fought hard taking an early 6-5 lead and holding that lead the entire contest. They rattled off the final four points of the game for the 25-19 score.

Quitman came back with a champion’s vengeance in the fourth game. There was no way Grand Saline was going to spoil the Lady Bulldogs perfect district record. The team’s battle back and forth with the game deadlocked at 15-15. With Quitman up 18-16, Hicks launched a beautiful long soft shot over the Lady Indian front line and out of reach for the back line. The score fired up the team and the large Lady Bulldog fan base in attendance. Grand Saline would not score again as the Lady Bulldogs won it going away at 25-16.

In the team victory Raley had 16 kills, 16 digs, one ace and two blocks; Tanner 14 digs, 14 kills, two aces, one block; Hicks four digs, two kills, one ace, 37 assists; Spears had 22 digs, eight kills; Abby Dobbs nine digs, one kill; Jentri Jackson 20 digs, four kills and Simpkins five digs, three kills.
