The Mineola Yellowjackets held their first scrimmage of the season Friday against the Elysian Fields Yellowjackets. The junior varsity team enjoyed a bright sunny afternoon during their portion of the scrimmage but the varsity team would have to fight the elements as well as the competition.

Coach Joe Drennon’s format for this first scrimmage included a scripted portion for both the junior varsity and varsity teams and one timed quarter of play for the varsity.

Drennon said the goal was to find which kids could compete and make plays in certain situations. Drennon said he was pleased about the varsity team’s ability to play well during the the scrimmage.

Shortly before the timed quarter began, rain descended on Meredith Memorial Stadium and those in attendance found some relief from the scorching temperatures that Mineola has endured the past few weeks.

Drennon’s design for the timed quarter included a sustained drive by the offense and a strong performance by the defense. The Yellowjackets accomplished both by allowing no points from Elysian Fields and scoring on a short Jeremiah Crawford run into the end zone.

“We were pleased by how we played today,” said Drennon. “We wanted to know who’s learned the most in two weeks and I believe we did that.”
