Quitman schools lay out year-end plans; students shift to learning real life skills

A letter from Quitman ISD Superintendent Rhonda Turner was sent to all students’ parents and guardians outlining the remainder of the school year.

In the letter, Turner stated, “No one expected our 2019-2020 school year to end so abruptly. No one anticipated our students not being able to return to school this year. We are dealing with a situation that is unprecedented, and one that I hope we never face again. I want you to know that during this incredibly difficult time I have seen some of the greatest acts of kindness from our staff, our students and our community. Our Bulldog family has stood firm and solid throughout this pandemic.”

The school calendar was altered so that students will finish school two days earlier than planned, with the last day being May 20. May 21 and 22 will become staff work days.

The students began participating in the Bulldog Academy this week and will continue the week of May 11. This is a two-week instructional unit where all students grades pre-K through 12 focus their time on learning real life skills.

Students will pick three skills each week to focus on. There will be no new assignments during the Bulldog Academy for any classes. Students are encouraged to use the extra time to complete any assignments that are outstanding during this two-week period.

All assignments are due through Google Classroom or the drop box at the elementary school by May 18. On May 19 and 20, students will return Chromebooks, library books, calculators and any textbooks for all campuses.

There will be no final exams this semester, and report cards will be mailed home the week of May 26.

Grades 3-8 STAAR and EOC (end of course) exams will not be given this summer. Normally, passing an EOC test is a graduation requirement. However, this school year only, students enrolled in EOC-tested courses (English, I, English II, Algebra I, Biology and U.S. History) will not have to complete their corresponding EOC test, provided they earn credit during the 2019-20 school year.

If a student is a senior and has not passed all EOCs and/or earned credits for graduation, the senior advisor will be contacting them regarding the individual graduation committee process.

For questions parents and students should reach out to teachers, counselors and principals via email. All staff emails are available at www.quitmanisd.net.
