Quitman tames Rains, A-G

Quitman’s Lady Bulldogs battled their way to a 9-1 District 12-3A record with a 3-1 victory over the Rain Lady Cats Tuesday and an exciting 3-2 win at Alba-Golden Friday.

Against Rains, it took four sets by the scores of 25-16, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18 in front of a large ‘Pink-Out” crowd to claim the win.

Head Coach Ashlee Lingo was proud of her team. “The ladies came to play on Tuesday. Rains has a very talented team. It was a fun game to watch and be a part of,” Lingo observed. “We are seeing improvements all over the court and we continue to gel. We had a great crowd!” 

For the Lady Bulldogs against Rains, senior outside hitter Madalyn Spears had 28 digs, 21 kills, three aces, one block and an assist. Jentri Jackson added 21 digs, 11 kills and two assists while Shelby Hayes had 10 digs, four kills and three assists. Lindsey Hornaday had 28 digs; Maddy Whitehurst two digs, six kills, two aces, one block; Abby Dobbs 16 digs; Julia Simpkins two digs, 5 kills, 2 blocks and Ava Burroughs two digs, five kills and two blocks.

In Fridays match at Alba-Golden, the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Panthers battled through five games before Quitman finally took a 15-7 win in the fifth set to claim the match. The scores were 25-13, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 15-7.

Stats from the Alba-Golden battle were: Jackson 15 kills, 13 digs, two aces; Lucy Brannon 21 digs, 8 kills; Whitehurst eight digs, nine kills, one block; Julia Simpkins three digs, five kills, one block; Burroughs has one dig, 10 kills, seven blocks; Hayes 11 digs, three kills, 40 assists; Dobbs 16 digs, one kill; Hornaday had 12 digs; and Emma VanBecelare had nine digs.

The pair of wins moves the Lady Bulldogs to 9-1 in district play and 23-11 on the year with Tuesday’s match at Edgewood looming as a shot at the district championship. The Lady Bulldogs finish up at home Friday against Mineola.

The Lady Panthers face Lone Oak on Tuesday and travel to Grand Saline Friday.
