Quitman Fire Department hosted a 9/11 memorial ceremony in honor of the victims and first responders who lost their lives or were affected in some way by the terrorist attack 17 years ago.

According to CNN, 2,977 people were killed in New York City, Washington, D.C. and outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Emergency responders in New York City deaths added up to 412.

Prior to the ceremony, Quitman Mayor David Dobbs gave a brief speech and blessing in honor of the 9/11 victims. Mike Gilmore of the Quitman Fire Department detailed the timeline of the attack and its effect on the world.

Gilmore then played a video featuring some of the videos and images of that tragic day and the song, “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning),” by Alan Jackson.

The flag outside of city hall and the fire department was lowered to half-mast in remembrance for the ceremony.

Tammy Gilmore of the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department and Bill Bollinger of Holly Lake Ranch Volunteer Fire Department lowered the flag, while Mike Gilmore played the bagpipes. All three are members of the Wood County Honor Guard.

Mike Gilmore ended the ceremony by thanking the guests for coming and telling them to never forget.
