Quitman win keeps playoff hopes alive
Quitman’s 73-39 victory at Winona last Tuesday night gave the Bulldogs a three-game winning streak and has vaulted them into playoff contention in District 13-3A.
Mineola stands in first place with a 8-1 record in district play. They are followed by Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill in second with an 8-2 slate. Winnsboro is at 6-4, Quitman 5-4 and Mt. Vernon 5-4 while Harmony is at 1-8 and winless Winona round out the standings.
The Bulldogs have their opportunity to secure a playoff spot this week as they take on Winnsboro and Mt. Vernon at Ballard Memorial Gym.
At Winona last Tuesday evening, both teams got off to a fast start. Quitman was hot from outside the three-point line hitting five triples in the opening quarter. Ford Tannebaum had a pair of long-distance triples while Hunter Jacobs, Brady Floyd and Thomas Sebedra hit from long range as the Bulldogs led 19-16 after one quarter.
The Quitman defense took over from there, holding the Wildcats to 23 points in the final three quarters while the Bulldogs hustled their way to 54 points.
Quitman had a huge second quarter scoring 24 points including 13 points from Levi Thompson as the Bulldogs surged ahead 42-22 at intermission. Quitman had six players score points in an 18-13 third quarter.
In the fourth quarter the defense continued to dominate, holding Winona to just one point the final eight minutes.
Thompson led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points including five triples followed by playmaker Floyd who added three treys. Ford Tannebaum had eight points, Jacobs seven, Landon Richey and Cason Johnson six points apiece, Carter Smith two and Jack Tannebaum one.
The Bulldog team effort, especially on defense, will make a difference in the final three games. Quitman is 15-16 this season.
