Quitman wins pair in Alba-Golden tri-match

For fast competitive action, the three-team format beats the traditional volleyball tournament hands-down. Quitman and Lone Oak joined host Alba-Golden last Friday for an afternoon of excellent volleyball.

Lone Oak took the opening match to a five-game win over the Lady Panthers. Quitman then secured the next two matches, defeating Lone Oak 25-10, 25-23, 25-22 and county rival Alba-Golden 25-23, 25-19, 25-19.

The first game of the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Panthers match-up best illustrated the whole day of competition.

Aces by Lady Panthers  Crimson Bryant and Autumn Whitten propelled the home side to an early 6-2 lead. Quitman’s Hallie Davis, who came through in critical sequences throughout the game, kept the Lady Bulldogs close as the Lady Panthers began to operate with confidence and open a lead.

Whitten, who had her best game of the short season, Bryant, and libero Hope Wiley led the Lady Panthers. Alba-Golden maintained a five-point advantage until late in the game.

It was the activity of Lady Bulldog Carley Spears that energized the Quitman comeback. Her hustling play was indicative of the consistent Quitman effort all night. Within striking range at 18-20, two aces by Alexis O’Neal, a second big kill by Davis and two great finishes at the net by Ava Burroughs secured the close win.

Several momentum shifts highlighted the second game of the match, as both sides competed furiously. Strong defensive net play by Bryant and Kalli Wright at times stymied Burrough’s finishing, but the Quitman standout altered her scoring strikes and found the open space in the defense.

The only downside to the day’s activity was an injury experienced by Lady Bulldog leader Lindsey Hornaday. She rolled an ankle in Quitman’s win over Lone Oak and was forced to rest and ice her ankle the rest of the night. Brooklyn Marcee provided excellent leadership in her absence.
