Led by senior Jace Reid, the Quitman Bulldogs held off the North Hopkins Panthers 58-55 at home last Tuesday. Reid dominated inside the paint scoring 27 points and hauling down 11 rebounds. The victory upped the Bulldog season slate to 3-3 as they get ready to head west for the annual Lipan tournament which hosts top teams from all over North Texas.

Reid scored the first six Quitman points as the Bulldogs took an early 6-2 lead. With Quitman leading 8-5, Bulldog junior Cody Hawley scored five consecutive points to put the home team up 11-5. The Panthers fought back to knot the score at 11-11. Another Reid jump shot put Quitman up 14-13, but North Hopkins scored the final nine points of the quarter on three free throws and a pair of treys to put the Panthers up 22-14 after one quarter.

Ben Burroughs got the Bulldogs going to start the second quarter with a three-pointer from the left corner making it 22-17. An Aiden Corrior bucket made it 22-19. Reid hit for eight more points and Ford Tannebaum made a bucket as the Bulldogs pulled to within 30-29 at the half.

In the third quarter, Trey Berry tied the score at 32-32 with a driving lay-up. Reid followed with a put back under the bucket followed by a long triple giving Quitman a 39-34 advantage. The Bulldogs did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs took a 43-38 lead into the final eight minutes of the contest. After a Corrior free throw with 5:42 to play the Bulldogs led 46-38. River Chaney and Corrior each hit a pair of free throws with just over a minute to play giving Quitman a 56-47 edge. Corrior had seven points in the final quarter on five of six charity tosses. The junior had 11 points for the game. The Bulldogs hit seven of eight free throws down the stretch to maintain the lead.

North Hopkins closed the gap hitting two threes in the closing seconds to make the final 58-55, Quitman.
