Quitman wreck takes two lives


A head-on collision just north of Quitman city limits took the lives of two Wood County residents last Monday on Highway 37. James Davis, 67, of Winnsboro and Kathryn Cameron, 72, of Quitman died as a result of the wreck which occurred at 12:08 p.m. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Davis was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Wes Criddle. Cameron was taken to East Texas Medical Center Hospital Quitman where she was pronounced dead by Criddle at 1:17 p.m.

Davis was driving a 1995 Oldsmobile and Cameron a 2007 Ford Taurus. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety report, Davis was southbound on Highway 37, just north of the Quitman city limits, while Cameron was traveling north. Davis failed to stay in the single lane and struck the Cameron vehicle head-on. Both vehicles sustained major damage.

Prior to the accident, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting the Davis vehicle driving recklessly and weaving on Highway 37.

DPS Trooper Justin Harrison, Corporal Tommy Barrett, Trooper Tony Garcia and Sergeant Willie Drabble along with Wood County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Matthew Peacock all worked the accident. Quitman firefighters and first responders also rushed to the scene of the accident.
