Lady Jackets 2-0 in district with defeat of Edgewood
In the first meeting of the two teams expected to battle it out for the District 12-3A softball championship it was the homestanding Mineola Lady Yellowjackets that came out on top of an 8-7 decision over the Edgewood Lady Bulldogs Friday night in Mineola. The win moved Mineola’s district record to 2-0 and the Lady Jackets’ season mark to 9-5-1. Edgewood now stands 1-1 in conference play.
Mineola was scheduled to play at Grand Saline in another conference match at 6 p.m. Tuesday (after Monitor presstime) before hosting Kemp for a district tiff at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Lady Yellowjackets will then visit Quitman on March 21 and host Alba on March 24 to round out the first half of district competition.
On Friday after a scoreless first inning, Edgewood took a 4-3 lead after two frames. The Lady Yellowjackets pulled out front 5-4 after three before Edgewood knotted the tally at 5-5 in the fourth.
In the sixth Mineola took the lead for good with one run to make the score 6-5, then upped the advantage to 8-5 with a pair of runs in the sixth. The top of the seventh saw Edgewood rally for two runs before a fly ball to center ending the game.
Sydnie Bell started in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Jackets and went the distance to claim the victory. Her bat played a big part in the victory also. In the third inning with two outs she got a single, took it to third on a fielding error and scored on a throwing error. Catcher Isabella Tresca, batting just behind Bell, made it to second on the same fielding error and scored on the same throwing error that plated Bell. Those two runs put Mineola up 5-4 at the time.
In the fifth with the count knotted at 5-5, Bell opened the inning with a single to left. Abby Graves came in as a courtesy runner for Bell and made it to second base on a passed ball, took third on a fielders’ choice and scored on a single by Tresca to give Mineola a lead that they never yielded.
For the game, Edgewood outhit the Lady Yellowjackets, 9-7, but the Lady Bulldogs committed four errors to just three for Mineola. For the game, Mineola struck out three Lady Bulldogs and yielded only two walks while the Lady Bulldogs failed to record a single base on balls while Lady Yellowjacket batters struck out five times.
