River authority grants $50K for bass event
The Sabine River Authority of Texas (SRA) awarded Wood County a $50,000 Community Assistance Program Grant on Dec. 30 as part of SRA’s Fiscal Year 2020 Economic Development Initiative.
The funds will be used to assist in hosting the 2020 Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest on Lake Fork Reservoir.
David Montagne, SRA’s Executive Vice-President and General Manager, in a letter to the county, wrote, “The SRA is proud to collaborate with other local entities, including Wood County, the Wood County Economic Development Commission and the City of Quitman Economic Development Corporation to host the Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament on Lake Fork Reservoir benefitting the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
“SRA looks forward to working with the county in the future as we continue to focus on increasing the economic vitality of the Sabine River Basin,” he said.
This event has generated millions of dollars for TPWD youth fishing and urban outreach programs and will coincide with the annual Wood County ‘Get Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs’ youth fishing tournament.
Funds provided for the Community Assistance Grant Program primarily fall within four project categories, which include water supply, wastewater management, water conservation and water quality. Most are limited to $10,000 per project. Some special projects may be categorized under an “other” category.
Funds for the grant to Wood County were approved by SRA’s board of directors in August 2019.
In order to be eligible for the Community Assistance Program, applicants should be a governmental entity, district or a non-profit, member-owned water supply corporation or sewer service corporation and located within the Sabine River Basin of Texas.
