Lady Hawks defeat Gary on Senior Night; clinch playoff spot
The Hawkins Lady Hawks wrapped up their regular season Tuesday with a 69-51 victory over the Gary Lady Bobcats. The win clinched a third-place finish in District 16-2A for the Lady Hawks as well as secured a playoff spot for Hawkins.
A 10-2 run during the first quarter allowed Hawkins to break away, eventually claiming a 41-25 lead by halftime. The Lady Hawks scored the go-ahead basket with a two-pointer from Destiny Chapman in the second period.
Raeli Smith led the charge for the Lady Hawks with 23 points and Chapman and Emily Moore finished with 10 points.
Also contributing for Hawkins were Silvia Montgomery with eight points, three rebounds and two steals, Christian Harris with seven points, a rebound and a steal, Emily Hodges with four points and five rebounds, Madison Staruska with four points, Jaycee Cheshire with two points and four rebounds, Hannah Langford with two points, six rebounds and a block and Harlie Conover with two points.
Regardless of postseason outcomes, the Lady Hawks will welcome a successful crop of players next season. The JV Lady Hawks finished as district champions this season with an undefeated district record.
The Lady Hawks (14-13, 6-4) faced off against Rivercrest at Mount Vernon High School in the first-round of the playoffs Tuesday, after Monitor press time. The winner will advance to play either Martins Mills or Blue Ridge in the second round Friday.
