Garrett Taylor and Jhett Jackson are headed to the Region II track meet in Whitehouse this week. Taylor will be in the high jump and Jackson will compete in the 300 meter high hurdles.

The annual Yantis Catfish Classic is coming up April 30 and May 1 at Lake Fork and headquartered at Minnow Bucket Marina. There will be over $24,000 in cash and prizes to hand out during the weekend. On April 30, the Yantis Catfish Parade will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by a BBQ with live entertainment to follow. Entry forms are available at Minnow Bucket and Crossroads Store.

Be sure you buy your tickets to win a Rossie Model 92 Carbine 357 Magnum /38 special and help out Quitman City Police Officer Terry Bevill's and his wife, Edwinna, who is suffering from a rare and incurable disease. The East Texas Giving Day sponsored by East Texas Communities Foundation will be May 3. There are 73 organizations which give services to Wood County. The Wood county Child Protection Board is one of those. For information go to

The Order of Eastern Star Quitman Chapter 695 meets the second Tuesday at Flora Lodge in Quitman. Potluck is at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

The "Thursday Nite Car Cruise" returns to Quitman Dairy Queen Thursday April 28 beginning at 6 p.m. There will be music from the past provided by Dale "The C" Cummings and someone will drive home with the People's Choice Award.

The Wood County Democrat Club will have a guest speaker at their April 28 meeting. Karen Wilkinson from the Smith County Democrat Club will speak about current issues facing the Democratic Party on the local and national level. The meeting will be at J.O.Y. Hall at the First United Methodist Church Quitman. Pot luck supper begins at 6 p.m. with the meeting to follow.

Quitman Animal Clinic is presenting the 14th Annual Pet Fair Saturday, April 30, from noon to 2 p.m. There is going to be a bounce house, selfie center, wagon rides, face painting and many more activities. There will also be ipad giveaways, a mechanical bull and free food. Live music will be provided by Gary Patrick and Johnny Magic will be on hand with his unique show.

The 1st Annual Music of the Night Glow-in-the-Dark 5K will be April 30 beginning and ending at Harold Simmons Pavilion in Golden. Registration is $30 and the event is a fundraiser to benefit the Alba-Golden Proud Panther Band sponsored by the Alba-Golden Band Boosters.
