Posted

The Quitman Bulldogs used a strong second quarter to subdue Winona and record a 67-51 district win.

Quitman fell behind 5-0 in the first minute of the contest but came back on a bucket by Brady Floyd followed by a steal and score from Aiden Corrior. Floyd came back with a three-point shot, and the Bulldogs took a 7-5 lead with still six minutes to play in the opening stanza.

The Wildcats came back with a pair of their own triples to take an 11-7 lead. After Winona went up 13-7, Ford Tannebaum hit a trey to make it 13-10. Winona scored twice more and led 17-10 after one quarter.

Jack Tannebaum got the Bulldogs rolling in the second quarter with a triple as the Bulldogs went on an 11-0 run to go ahead 21-17. Levi Thompson had a pair of buckets while Garin Kisinger took care of defense around the bucket. Landon Richey came in to score six points and dominate the paint, and Corrior added another bucket to give the Bulldogs a 34-25 lead at the half.

Quitman came out strong to start the third quarter as senior Corrior hit for eight points in the period leading the Bulldogs to a 50-34 advantage.

The Bulldogs hit on 13-16 free throws in the final quarter to keep the Wildcats from mounting any kind of comeback. Thompson’s 10 points, including eight successful free throws, led the way for the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter.

Thompson led Quitman with 19 points including 13-16 from the free throw line. Corrior once again had a steady and consistent game, scoring 17 points and bringing a solid defensive effort.

The Bulldogs are at home Friday against Mt. Vernon.
