Wood County Commissioners passed a resolution accepting the donation of a female Belgian Malinois puppy for the sheriff’s office. Wood County Sheriff Tom Castloo is housing the two-month old and has begun social and obedience training.

“A local citizen contacted me a few weeks ago and wanted to donate a Malinois to us,” Castle said. “We got to get the pick of the litter, a dominant female. At about six months of age we will select a handler. The handler and the dog will go to training where they will become certified as a team.”

Castloo said the handler will be from his staff. Veterinary and feed costs are being donated by private citizens.

“Having been canine handler for the Border Patrol for nine years, I knew what to look for, and this puppy demonstrated every single characteristic that you would hope for,” Castloo added.

The dog would be trained in drug detection.

Commissioners approved the lease agreement for the Lake Hawkins Camping and RV Park to Ryan and Liz Eaton.

“The current contractor out there is doing an above marvelous job keeping that place clean and manageable making everybody happy,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Mike Simmons said. “It’s kind of like Mayberry.”

In personnel actions, commissioners approved a transfer request by Tully Davidson to move William Burge from the sheriff’s office to the environmental officer position at $23.46 per hour. Tax Assessor-Collector Carol Taylor’s request to move Hallie Moore from part-time to full-time auto deputy at $17.68 per hour was approved. Also approved from Taylor’s office was the separation of Kristie Langley.

Wood County Chief Probation Officer Melanie Whitehurst’s request to hire Sean Dylan Graham as juvenile supervision officer at an annual salary of $34,532 was approved.

A high bid offer of $1,900 from Harold Jackson II was accepted on tax-sale struck off property in Mineola. Wood County will receive $574 from the sale.

After a public hearing, commissioners approved the cancellation of the Brentwood Acres Subdivision.
