Sheriff’s office giving away fishing poles to youth

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the Wood County Sheriff’s plans for the annual KidFish normally held the first weekend in June has had to change. Sheriff Tom Castloo still wants kids to get out with their families and go fishing on June 6, the state’s free fishing day.

The sheriff and his staff will be giving out free fishing poles on June 6 starting at 8 a.m. at the sheriff’s office in Quitman. Parents and guardians are encouraged to bring their kids by to pick up the poles from officers. Kids must be present to pick up the poles.

“We regret we are not going to be able to host the annual KidFish. We want folks to come by and get a pole and enjoy the free fishing day in the state of Texas. We hope kids get out with family and friends on a smaller scale and hope they have just as much fun,” Castloo said. “We hope next year can be bigger and better. We encourage the kids to pick up that fishing pole and go fishing all day.”

The sheriff’s office is located at 402 South Stephens Street in Quitman just southwest of the Wood County Courthouse.
