Spears shines in sprints during Quitman Relays

Harmony High School captured the boys and girls varsity titles at the 2019 Quitman Relays on Thursday, April 4. The competitive field included athletes from Alba-Golden, Edgewood, Grand Saline, Harmony, Quitman, Saltillo and Winona.

The Quitman Bulldogs boys team finished second, and the Alba-Golden boys team finished fourth. In the girls competition, Alba-Golden claimed second place and Quitman fourth.

Quitman sprinter Madalyn Spears won blue ribbons in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash in times of 12.90 and 27.21 seconds. Zane Smith of Alba-Golden placed first in three events: long jump with 19 feet 5 inches, triple jump with 40-1 and high jump with 6-2.

Other first-place finishers from the two schools were Quitman’s Trey Berry in the 100 meter dash (11.21), Quitman’s Riley Flanagan in the 800 meter run (2:07.37), Quitman’s Langdon Bautista in pole vault (12-6) and Alba-Golden’s Ashlyn Rogers in the 400 meter dash (1:04.00).

Alba-Golden athletes placing second or third were Jon-Michael Chadwick second in the 100 meter dash and third in the 200 meter dash; Zane Smith second and Boedy Baker third in the 300 meter hurdles; Jon-Michael Chadwick third in long jump; Gracie Teel second in the 400 meter dash; Bella Crawford second in the 100 meter and second in the 300 meter hurdles; Lizzie Hallman second in triple jump and third in long jump; Abby Hallman second in pole vault; Samantha Rambsel third in triple jump; Kadence Thompson third in high jump; and Kalli Wright second in shot put.

The Alba-Golden girls 4x100 meter relay finished third while the 4x400 meter relay finished second.

Quitman athletes collecting second- or third-place ribbons were Trey Berry second in 200 meter dash and second in the long jump; Riley Flanagan third in 400 meter dash; Gavin Derryberry third in the triple jump; Isaiah Aymond third in pole vault; Joanna Santiago second in the 1600 meter run; and Halie Davis third in shot put.

The Quitman boys took second place in the 4x200 meter relay, third place in the 4x100 meter relay, and third in the 4x400 meter relay. The Quitman girls captured second place in the 4x100 meter relay.
