Lady Hawks lose opener but take third place in tourney

The Hawkins Lady Hawks did not start the season the way they had hoped, losing to the Arp Lady Tigers Tuesday 47-37, but did pick up a third-place finish in the Carl Oliver Memorial Tournament in New Diana during the weekend.

The Lady Hawks performed well in the first period trailing Arp by only nine points but the Lady Tigers had a 13-3 run in the second period to bring the halftime score to 32-13.

The Lady Hawks increased their efforts against Arp during the second half of the game, outscoring Arp 24-15, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Arp’s 19-point halftime lead and the Lady Hawks dropped their first game of the season.

Hannah Langford led the charge for Hawkins’ offense, scoring nine points, with six points during the fourth period. She also contributed nine rebounds and four steals.

Also helping the effort for Hawkins were Madison Staruska with eight points, two rebounds and one steal. Raeli Smith had five points, six rebounds and a steal, Destiny Chapman had four points, five rebounds and a steal and Emily Hodges had two points and a rebound. Silvia Montgomery had two points, two rebounds and three steals, Christian Harris had two points and two rebounds and Emily Moore had two points, two rebounds and a steal.

Oliver Memorial Tournament. The Lady Hawks pulled ahead early and led 16-8 at the half. The

Lady Hawks their lead in the final period, scoring 11 points.

Raeli Smith led the way for Hawkins, scoring seven points, with four of them coming in the third period. She also had six rebounds and one steal.

Also contributing for the Lady Hawks were Hodges with seven points, Langford with six points, seven rebounds and four steals and Montgomery with five points, five rebounds and five steals. Jaycee Cheshire with four points and six rebounds, Moore with four points, 6 rebounds and two steals, and Staruska with two points, two steals and a rebound.

In a great showing, Raeli Smith scored 13 points but the Lady Hawks came up short against the Jefferson Lady Bulldogs 54-52 on Friday in their second game of the tournament. Hawkins went on an 18-4 run in the first period and eventually claimed a 29-21 lead at halftime. Jefferson came out of the break on fire and outscored the Lady Hawks 33-23 in the final two periods for the close win.

Langford put two three-pointers on the board and scored eight points total with 10 rebounds and two steals. Two other players also added 10 or more points for Hawkins. Chapman racked up 11 points and Moore added 10 points. Also contributing for Hawkins were Montgomery with six points, five rebounds and four steals and Staruska with four points, a rebound and a steal. Smith added six rebounds.

After the loss to Jefferson, the Lady Hawks were relegated to the third-place game on Saturday and came out victorious against the Bloomburg Lady Cats, thanks to the help of Moore, who scored nine points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Hawkins trailed early and was behind 19-17 at halftime but the Lady Hawks came back to life in the final two periods. Hawkins clinched the lead in the third period on a two-pointer from Staruska and cemented the win in the final quarter, scoring 13 points.

Also chipping in for Hawkins were Smith with seven points, seven rebounds and a steal, Staruska with seven points, a rebound and a steal, Langford with seven points, five rebounds and a steal, Chapman with four points and three rebounds, Hodges with two points and two rebounds and Montgomery with two points, two steals and a rebound.

The Lady Hawks (2-2) hosted the White Oak Lady Roughnecks Monday and traveled to play the Sabine Lady Cardinals Tuesday – after Monitor press time – before breaking for the Thanksgiving holiday.
