In addition to helping choose the president of the United States and voting for local school board and city council candidates, Wood County voters will have choices for United States and state senators and United States and state representatives on Nov. 3.

Sen. John Cornyn, Republican, is seeking his fourth term in the U.S. Senate and faces Democrat Mary “M.J.” Hegar, Libertarian Kerry Douglas McKennon and Green Party candidate David B. Collins.

Republican Lance Gooden is seeking a second term in Congress, representing the 5th District which includes western Wood County. He is being challenged by Democrat Carolyn Salter and Libertarian Kevin A. Hale.

The eastern side of Wood County is represented in District One by Republican Louie Gohmert who is seeking his ninth term and faces Democrat Hank Gilbert.

The race for Texas Senate features two Mineola residents, Bryan Hughes and Audrey Spanko.

Hughes is seeking his second term to represent the First District as a Republican after representing the area as a state representative for 16 years.

He is being challenged by Democrat Audrey Spanko.

Republican Cole Hefner and challenger, Democrat LaWyanda Prince, are both from Mount Pleasant. Hefner is seeking his third term as District 5 representative, taking over the seat when Hughes won the Senate seat.

Early voting got underway on Tuesday and continues through Oct. 30, with locations in Quitman, Mineola, Hawkins and Winnsboro.
