State sales tax report shows retail growth across county

The final sales tax report for 2019 shows retail sales gains of more than 10 percent for Wood County and individual gains for cities ranging from almost seven to more than 30 percent.

The six cities that collect a 1.5 percent sales tax on top of the 6.25 percent state sales tax earned $4,834,080 during 2019 compared to $4,386,216 in 2018.

The county collected an additional $2,134,964 for the year with a half-cent sales tax, which is up 11 percent over 2018 when $1,920,817 was earned.

In total the seven entities brought in $6,969,044 in sales tax revenue for the year compared to $6.3 million last year.

For December, the six cities earned $396,453 compared to $377,516 in December 2018. The county earned $176,548, almost five percent ahead of December a year ago.

Mineola brought in $185,303 in December, a gain of 4.56 percent over last year. For the year the city has earned $2,218,198, up by 6.83 percent from last year’s $2,076,330.

Quitman’s December rebate for $66,623 is up 14.24 percent from last December when $58,317 was earned. The yearly total of $746,762 represents a rise of 9.41 percent from 2018.

The December report from the state comptroller’s office is primarily for sales by merchants in October reported to the state in November. The comptroller rebates cities and counties their shares on a monthly basis.

Alba’s sales tax income for the year totals $177,630, an increase of 7.5 percent from 2018. The December rebate of $15,773 is a 33 percent gain.

Hawkins booked $27,285 in December for a 23 percent gain bringing the total for the year to $377,981, a rise of 30 percent.

Yantis received a $6,433 rebate in December which is up by 23 percent. For 12 months the city has earned $80,654, a 10.3 percent increase.

Winnsboro saw its December payment drop slightly from $102,748 a year ago to $95,034 this month. For the year the city is more than 12 percent ahead of 2018 with income of $1,232,852 compared to $1,099,050 in 2018.

The comptroller reports sales tax income on a calendar year, though cities base their budgets primarily on an Oct. 1 fiscal year.

Cities generally dedicate a cent to their general funds and a half-cent to economic development.
