Sweet potato festival draws big crowds

Posted

The annual Golden Sweet Potato Festival went off without a hitch last week, including some great weather, festival board president Grant Sadler said.

The crowds may have been the best since the festival began in the 1980s. And the Saturday morning parade was also one of the best ever, he added.

Sandra Hester served as the parade marshal, and Abby Hallman was crowned the Sweet Potato Queen Saturday afternoon.

Numerous other youth winners were named at Thursday night’s pageant.

Other events included Mutton bustin’ and gospel singing on Friday night.

The auction Saturday afternoon raised $24,500, with another $19,000 coming from the Kubota raffle donated by Alba Tractor, won by Mineola Community bank.

That money will go right back into the community, Sadler said, and it happens because the community comes out and supports the festival.
