Mize leaving for Winona

Quitman High School Principal Cody Mize will not be returning to the school after spring break. He will begin his new role as superintendent of the Winona Independent School District (WISD).

Mize, a Mineola High School graduate, started his career in education in Quitman as a teacher and coach. Before coming to Quitman he was the principal of Alba Golden Elementary School.

“There is no doubt that Quitman is a very special place to me. I had the opportunity to begin my teaching/coaching career here in 2005 and had the opportunity to return several years later as the High School Principal,” Mize said. “We have outstanding teachers, students, parents, and community support which has helped make this campus one of the best in East Texas.”

Mize has had a superintendent’s job in his plans for the future, but was not expecting an offer quite so soon in his career. “My goal when I moved into administration was to eventually find a superintendent position in East Texas,” Mize explained. “I had no idea it would happen this soon and the opportunity to lead Winona Independent School District is an amazing offer that I couldn’t pass up.”

Winona is a rural school district located in the northeastern section of Smith County. The community supported a bond package that allowed the district to update their school facilities and according to Mize, their high school campus is one of the nicest schools in the area. “I’m excited about the opportunity to build relationships in the community, work with campus administrators and program directors to find ways to make this district one of the highlights in public education in our area,” Mize noted.

Mize is thankful for the opportunity to have served in Quitman ISD. “I would personally like to thank Rhonda Turner and the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to work in Quitman and I want to thank the community of Quitman for their support of our campus for the two years that I have been here,” Mize stated. “I said this when I came here and I will continue to say this in the years ahead and that is, a school will be its very best when the kids, teachers, parents, and community work as one.’

Although Mize will be making the trip to WISD each day, he is not leaving the Quitman area community. “I will continue to pastor our church at Cartwright Baptist Church and keep my business interests at Quitman Oil and Tire Center. So although I am leaving the school district, I certainly don’t plan to leave the community,” Mize said. “It is a second home to me and I plan to continue to find ways to improve it every chance I get.”

Plans for a replacement for Mize as high school principal had not been announced at press time.
