Trustees of the Alba-Golden Independent School District reconstituted the school board with the swearing in of Trustee Johnny Teel at the Dec. 10 regular meeting.

Teel had stepped aside from the board while a nepotism resolution regarding the employment of his wife was pending. In Teel’s absence, Nick Kerry filled the seat. Kerry offered his resignation letter at the meeting.

Board President Mike Ragsdale and Superintendent Dwayne Ellis expressed gratitude to Kerry for his service. Ellis reminded Kerry the school “will continue to need good men to serve” and stated he hoped Kerry would pursue further service.

Following a brief closed session, the board acted on three items. In unanimous votes, the board approved the renewal of an inter-local agreement with Wood County, empowering the county to collect taxes on behalf of the school.

Secondly, and upon the recommendation of Ellis, the board approved the sale of a home at 1364 County Road 2377 to Brad Lennon. The home is located directly across from the junior high school on school property west of CR 2377. The sale is for demolition, removal and land restoration only.

Lastly, the board voted to approve the incentive, retention and recruitment pay scale as proposed by Ellis. This approval should assist with ongoing staffing efforts in the district. This vote was 6–0 with Teel abstaining.

Residents Josh and Julie Cole proudly accompanied to the meeting their daughter Avery, who was recognized as December Elementary Student of the Month. Avery, a fourth-grader, was described as a model student who demonstrates academic excellence, a caring and empathetic nature, and strong leadership skills. Avery competes in the UIL Oral Reading competition and has a long-term goal of attending Texas Christian University. Comments from her teachers and principal illustrated the positive impact Avery has on Alba-Golden Elementary School.

Secondary school Student of the Month Cassidy Burris was unable to attend the meeting; she was participating in the One-Act Play Christmas Show.

Ragsdale and Teel were joined at the meeting by trustees Joe Carr, Brady Robinson, Jackie Staley, Jason Stovall, and James Wilkerson.
