• Quitman Youth Foundation’s player sign-ups are going on three more Wednesdays (including today, Feb. 8) at 6-8 p.m. at the Nutrition Center Building next to the ballfields. Registration will also be Feb. 15 and 22.

• On Thursday the Wood County Texas Extension Education Association Club will offer “Sew Fun” from 9-6 p.m. at the county extension office in Quitman. There is a $5 fee for the class. Call the extension office at 903-763-2924 for more information.

• Also on Thursday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is holding an open house meeting at Jarvis Christian College from 6-8 p.m. to get input on the Comprehensive Conservation Plan and draft Environmental Assessment developed for the Little Sandy National Wildlife Refuge. The meeting will be in the Mirror Room of the E.W. Rand Recreation Center.

• Quitman Library’s 2nd Friday Acoustic Jam will mark its fifth anniversary with this Friday’s get-together. Musicians and observers are all welcome. The event is from 6-9 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library.

• At 7 p.m. on Friday The Chuck Wagon Gang will be singing at Pilgrim Rest #2 Baptist Church. The church is located at 205 CR 2376 in the Alba-Golden area.

• Kids’ Trout Fishing Day will be 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Wyatt Pond at the Mineola Nature Preserve. Take your fishing tackle and bait (whole kernel corn, Berkley power bait and small spinners) to fish for the 1,250 trout to be stocked. Because of the TPWD sponsorship, there is a special license exemption for adults who are actively helping children fish. All other anglers are required to have a freshwater fishing license. 

• Saturday brings the Mineola Kiwanis Club’s Chili Cook-off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $5 and benefits the Kiwanis’ Club’s services to children.

• On Monday two Bible studies start at Holly Brook Baptist church. One will be for senior adults and the other will be an evening study for women.

• The Winnsboro Baseball and Softball Association is signing up players for softball and baseball this year through Feb. 15. Registration forms can be obtained at JEB Originals and Scott’s Pharmacy.

• Next Wednesday (Feb. 15) the Quitman Arboretum will hold a free community workshop at 9 a.m. on pruning roses in, of all places, the rose gardens at the Arboretum.
