They say fall has arrived. Has it? The leaves are turning and the air is somewhat cooler but I’m ready for sweater weather.

We have started a new program at the Library. Work from Home Wednesdays had its first event on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and was well-received. The next one is Wednesday, Oct. 19 with “It Works.” Come on in and find out about this business.

Computer Q & A has returned to the third Saturday of the month. This is an opportunity to ask questions about computer technology. Anything from how do you turn this thing on to attaching files and uploading / downloading documents.

Friends of the Library will meet on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. Guest speaker will be Kathy Dunlap explaining the Daughters of the American Revolution: what they are and what they do.

We are nearing the completion of our inventory. Next will come the more dreaded weeding. First we count and make sure that what we think we have is actually on the shelves. Next we look and see what is circulating and of interest to our community. No one likes to get rid of a book but we do try our best to do so in a responsible manner. We try to sell our discards in three avenues: Annex book sale, Amazon sales, or Better World Books. If the books are too far gone then we have to make the decision to toss them. So, not fun.

The ibrary book club is currently reading The Train to Crystal City by Jan Jarboe Russell. It is about a family internment camp that was located in Crystal City, Texas during the Second World War. It is an eye-opening non-fiction read written in novel style. You get to know a couple of the families caught in this situation. Join us for a book discussion on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. This selection is also part of Gulf Coast Reads.

We have a new face at the library. She is doing her library practicum with us as she pursues her degree in Information Sciences. We are trying to let her experience as many aspects of library operations as possible.

We have three employees who are part of the Mineola High School Yellowjacket Band. You won’t see them much in the month of October. Besides being away playing at the football games on Friday nights, they will be participating in several marching contests in October culminating in the UIL competition. We wish them well!

Come by and visit with us. We are located at 301 N. Pacific Street, at the corner of Blair and Pacific (aka Hwy 69). See us on the web at mineolalibrary.com. Or give us a call at 903-569-2767. We are here Tuesday to Saturday unless there’s really bad weather or a holiday. We do have an answering machine if you need to call after hours and ask a question. Book drops are located on the front porch for returning items after hours, too.

Don’t forget, the Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization. Your donations are tax-deductible.
