First responders, block party captains set for Texans Against Crime night
For 15 years the Mineola Police Department has asked residents to host gatherings in neighborhoods, at businesses, churches and other locations to show their support for what has become Texans Against Crime night. On Tuesday people at seven different locations will celebrate the town’s 16th year of participation.
The observance originally began as National Night Out but was held on a Tuesday evening in August. After some hot, miserable years the police department switched to the Texans Against Crime observance which is the second Tuesday in October.
“Neighborhoods throughout Mineola are invited to join forces with other communities statewide in the effort to reduce crime,” Police Captain Jack Newman said.
“Over the years, Mineola has seen great success with community block parties,” the police captain said, and received national recognition for their efforts. “Communities get stronger and residents become more aware of how to prevent crime.” Police, firefighters and EMS crews make the rounds of the parties to give the community a chance to get to know them in a nonstressful situation.
Police also say that awareness of one’s neighbors and who should be coming and going at their homes helps to prevent crime.
This year’s parties on Tuesday evening will be:
Margaret and Don Lay’s home on Pamela Drive from 6-8;
Jo McCarty at the Mineola Housing Authority office on Goodson Circle from 5:30 to 7;
Rev. Demethruis Boyd at St. Paul Baptist Church from 7-10;
Carol Cassity at the Seniors Nutrition Center on University Street beginning at 5:30;
Lee James at Audrey’s Ice Cream on South Johnson Street from 6-7:30;
Linda Martin at Spring Lake, 6:30-10and
Lisa Hardin on University Street.
