• Mineola Middle School Meet the Teacher is set for 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Middle School.

• Mineola High School Meet the Teacher will from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the High School.

• Students return to the classroom in Mineola for the first day of school on Thursday. Primary and Elementary Schools begin at 7:50 a.m. and will be let out at 3:30 p.m. The Middle and High Schools begin at 8 a.m. and end and the school day ends at 3:40 p.m.

• Aug. 16, noon – Annual teacher appreciation luncheon in the Family Life Center honoring teachers and staffs of Harmony and Hawkins schools. Senior adult ministry, “Saints Alive!” will host. Church members will provide desserts.

• The Quitman football scrimmage with Hawkins was moved to Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. in Quitman at Bud Moody Stadium.

• The Quitman City Council has their regular meeting this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at 401 E. Goode Street.

• “Meet the Teacher” for all campuses in Quitman ISD is Thursday evening. Quitman Elementary is 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Junior High and High School is 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Classes in QISD begin Wednesday, August 22.

Special Olympics returns in style

After a five-year absence, over 150 athletes from Como-Pickton, Cedar Creek and Upshur and Wood Counties competed for special recognition at a state-sanctioned Special Olympics track and field meet at the Quitman High School track field on Friday, April 5.

Symphonic band presents Christmas concert

Come on over to Mineola’s beautiful Historic Select Theater and hear the Lake Country Symphonic Band’s Christmasy “Everything Christmas” concert.

Concerts are Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. and Tuesday evening, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. Mike Holbrook is back in the director’s seat, so it’s sure to be a fun-filled couple of hours.
