The Wood County Child Welfare and Protection Board hosted a large crowd Monday for its fifth annual Tips for Tots event at A.J.’s Fish House Restaurant in Alba in support of Wood County foster children.

The event featured celebrity waiters, including community officials, church ministers, teachers and welfare and protection board members.

Waiter tips, raffle items, a live auction and a bake sale were utilized as fundraisers for local children under the supervision and care of Child Protective Services (CPS).

Local auctioneer Shannon Davis led the live auctions, and Yantis FFA students assisted by busing tables and serving customers.

Welfare Board President Sam Scroggins said this year’s Tips for Tots was a success overall. The final tally of the funds raised was still being counted Tuesday morning.

The welfare board gives monthly allowances, birthday gift cards, clothing allotments and school supplies to Wood County foster children. The board also gives funds to help kids participate in programs like band, sports, scouts, 4-H and camps.

The protection board funds the welfare board and provides maintenance of the Wood County Rainbow Room, a 24-hour emergency clothing facility.

Programs to help the children are an initial clothing allowance of $100 per child, $200 per child for back-to-school clothing and supplies, an average $200 per child for Christmas wish list items and a party, an age-appropriate monthly allowance, $25 per child birthday money and special requests to help provide a normal life for these children.
