Quitman drops 1st district game to Edgewood

District 12-3A favorite Edgewood defeated Quitman 71-20 to open conference play before a large crowd in Edgewood last Tuesday night.

After taking an 18-9 first quarter lead, Edgewood went on a 17-0 run in the second quarter to take a 35-9 lead into intermission. Quitman hit three, three-point shots on a pair of long shots by Jace Reid and one from Garrett Peek.

The Edgewood full-court press gave Quitman problems and led to several turnovers. Edgewood’s Trey Erwin scored a game high 33 points. Reid led Quitman scoring with eight points.

Quitman will return to district action after the Christmas break with a home game against Eustace Tuesday. During the district break the Bulldogs will travel to Quinlan Boles for a tournament. They will open tournament play against Wolfe City at 11 a.m.

“We wanted to go ahead and play this first district game early because that way we can get a few games in over the break. We have a young team and we need to play as many ballgames as we can,” Quitman Head Coach Jim Reid said. “Edgewood, Kemp and Mineola each have a lot of talent and should be the favorites in our district.”
