Twice-a-year Hwy. 80 sale brings out the crowds

A refreshing northern breeze welcomed hawkers of wares up and down Highway 80 this past weekend. The semi-annual Highway 80 Sale drew many locals interested in finding that something special.

Among those exhibiting their goods were Billy Meeks of Lewisville who was assisting his cousin, Susan Spears of Mineola.

Meeks noted that the most unique and valuable items he had for sale were some antique plows.

“They are hard to come by and command a great value,” he offered.

Additionally, he pointed out the canary yellow front end of a 1952 Chevy pickup, which he had placed at the front of his display.

Nearby, two sisters, Cassandra Gibson of Quitman and Marinda Vance of Elmo, were displaying their home-made embroidery. “We just love doing embroidery,” they admitted.

Staged under the shade of some hardwoods just off the highway were Thomas Parker of Athens and Laura Holster of Winnsboro.

Parker offered that the item of most value in his collection was a Budweiser carousel light which featured the Budweiser wagon and the Clydesdale team of horses. “It’s a valuable piece,” he admitted, “and I’m hesitant to let it go.” In addition to a nice rifle, Parker and Holster also featured a collection of beautiful crosses.

Sale veteran Clyde Cash was busy under the canopy he shared with fellow hawker Brad Scoggins – both of Tyler – creating name-rings. The stainless steel rings are etched with names or sayings of a customer’s choice.

Although he got a bit of a late set-up, Cash was pleased with the business he had received on Friday afternoon. “I normally follow the gun show circuit,” he explained, “but always try to get up here to the Highway 80 Sale.”
