Two die in Tx-37 head-on collision
A tragic highway crash last Thursday took the lives of a Quitman resident and her seven-month old grandson.
Anna Ruth Bates, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Janae Holland. Bates’ grandson, Zander, died Sunday at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas of injuries received in the crash.
DPS troopers were called to the scene at 8:45 p.m. where Bates had been traveling north on Texas Hwy. 37 in a 2015 Dodge Journey around a curve three miles north of Mineola. She was hit head-on by a 2003 Toyota 4-Runner driven by Kaylie Michelle Hasten, 24, of Mineola who was driving south on Hwy. 37.
Hasten crossed into the opposite lane and struck Bates’ vehicle head-on, according to the DPS report. Hasten was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. A one-year-old female passenger in her vehicle also was hospitalized in stable condition.
Passengers in the Bates vehicle included her six-year-old daughter, four-year-old granddaughter, and seven-month-old grandson. Bates’ daughter and granddaughter are stable and have been released to their homes from Children’s Medical Center. The grandchildren are the children of Jordan and Molli Bates of Quitman, and Anna Bates is the wife of Kevin Bates of Quitman.
All occupants in the vehicles were restrained.
A “Go Fund Me” account has already raised over $30,000 to help defray medical and funeral expenses for the family. Several area businesses have been active in donating percentages of their day’s profits.
Lake Fork guide Brooks Rogers is donating fishing guide services, auctioning a full day trip with 100 percent of the funds going to the family. Bids can be placed on Rogers’ Facebook page.
Services for Anna Bates and Zander Bates will be held at Beaty Funeral Home Chapel in Mineola Friday at 2 p.m. with visitation Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
A benefit account has been set up for the Bates family through Mineola Community Bank. Donations can be made at any branch including Mineola, Mineola Brookshire’s, Grand Saline, Lindale, Winnsboro and Edgewood.
