Two Quitman businesses exit

Posted

Quitman Development Corporation (QDC) members moved swiftly through a short agenda Monday evening.

QDC Executive Director Rodney Kieke reported a pair of businesses has closed their operations in Quitman. “Whiskey Ray’s has moved to Canton. I have been in contact with owners Tracie and James Bracken. Right now they are leasing a place in Canton. They don’t have enough space for their inventory. They still want to buy a building in Quitman,” Kieke noted.

The other business closing was Bella Floral whose owners have taken positions at Twigs in Canton. “It was kind of a double-whammy, but I don’t really look for it to be a huge impact on the tax dollars,” Kieke added. “It does leave a void in our downtown area.”

Kieke also reported the old Cain Hardware building (Greenlaw’s) is now for sale. He also said O’Reilly’s Auto Parts will begin demolition efforts at their site on S. Main St. The property was where Chevrolet dealers in the past have done business.

Things are still on hold for Minuteman Ordnance Company’s construction of a new retail facility with a gun range and classrooms at the former site of the Wood County Democrat offices. Material costs are high at this time, but the owners are still planning on going forward with their plans.

Kieke said local attorney Mark Breding has crews working as he plans to move his main office next door and open room for more attorneys.

Kieke also reported the owner of the food truck park just west of town at the corner of Hwy. 154 and Clark St. has added a roof and is working on bathroom areas. The park is owned locally by Brian Morgan. There will be five slots available.

The board also discussed the possibility of striping the parking lot behind Jan’s Restaurant. They will look into the cost. Kieke reported the dead trees in the parking lot will be pulled up and pricing on planting new trees will be studied.
