The race is on for Wood County district attorney. Two candidates have filed for the position. Incumbent Angela Albers and challenger Jodi Cox are set to square off in the Republican primary March 3.

Albers was appointed to the position by Gov. Greg Abbott in February after the resignation of Jim Wheeler last fall. She had been the assistant district attorney.

Albers grew up in Magnolia and graduated summa cum laude from Sam Houston State University where she majored in English and minored in Spanish. She was accepted to Baylor Law School and graduated in June 2000. She went to work as an assistant district attorney in Rockwall County.

During her nearly seven years with Rockwall County, Albers handled misdemeanors, felonies and some appeals. She left Rockwall County upon the birth of her twins and moved to Wood County where she became an assistant district attorney in 2007.  In her position in Wood County she has handled hundreds of criminal cases ranging from speeding appeals to murders and child rape.

Albers has called Wood County home for more than 13 years and is raising her three children here. Her 13-year old twin boys, Seth and Tate, are active in FFA, sports and student council at Alba-Golden ISD. Her eight-year old daughter, Ella Catherine, is a third grader at Alba-Golden and participates in UIL and is taking gymnastics.

They are active members of First Baptist Church of Mineola where she teaches first grade and kindergarten during Sunday School. Albers is a member of Mineola Kiwanis, Rotary Club of Winnsboro and Quitman Pilot Club.

Cox is an assistant district attorney with District Attorney Will Ramsay in the 8th Judicial District and prosecutes felony cases in Hopkins, Franklin and Delta counties. She has experience as a regional attorney where she was a trial attorney and prosecuted cases for the Department of Family and Protective Services. Cox has experience in felony courts, child protection courts, juvenile courts, misdemeanor courts, municipal courts, probate courts and mental health cases.

Cox and her husband, Matt, grew up in Wood County and graduated from Winnsboro ISD. They are raising their four children, Greyson, Jenna, Rhett and Jocelyn in Winnsboro. The Coxes are members of Walnut Street Baptist Church and are involved in numerous community organizations.

Cox is a graduate of Texas A&M University School of Law and moved back to Wood County to live and practice law. She is a member of the Wood County Republican Women.
